The Anesthesiology Specialist Study Program (PS) before July 1, 1972 was the Anesthesiology section of the Department of Surgery FK Airlangga University/Dr. Soetomo. Upon returning dr. Karjadi Wirjoatmodjo from America, dr. Herlien H. Megawe from Sweden, and dr. Siti Chasnak Saleh from the Netherlands, attended Anesthesiology education, so the Department of Anesthesiology was established which was separate from the Department of Surgery. Until around 1985 the scope of work included Simpang Hospital and Dr. Soetomo (operating rooms are still separate: Surgery, Gynecology, Ophthalmic and ENT Operating Rooms). With the development of the field of surgery, the field of Anesthesiology is also following its development. This development led to a division in the science of Anesthesiology so that the fields of interest were Cardio-Vascular-anesthesia, Neuro-anesthesia, Pediatric-anesthesia, Obstetric-anesthesia, Orthopedic-anesthesia, trauma-emergency, and Anesthesia pain management for organ transplantation. Until it developed into the Education Study Program for Anesthesiology Specialist and Intensive Therapy, Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University as it is today.
To become a leading, independent, and innovative Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Specialist Study Program at the national and international level, as well as a pioneer in the development of science, medical technology, and humanities in the fields of anesthesiology and intensive therapy, especially emergency-disaster, intensive therapy, and pediatric anesthesia, based on religious morals in 2025.
The definition and leading, independent, and innovative are as follows:

2.) Independent: Become human resources with integrity, strength and resilience so that they are ready to stand alone in facing a dynamically developing environment.
3.) Innovative: Being a human resource who always has the desire to create something new in the field of anesthesiology and intensive therapy in providing services to the community.
1.) Organize and develop medical academic and specialist education that is recognized at the national and international levels based on national values and religious morals.
2.) To carry out basic and applied medical research in the field of anesthesiology and intensive therapy, especially emergencies-disasters, intensive therapy, and pediatric anesthesia, which are innovative and independent based on national values and religious morals to support the development of education and community service.
3.) Increase expertise in the field of medical science and technology, specialist in anesthesiology and intensive therapy, which upholds the values of professionalism, spirit of entrepreneurship and the humanities for public health.
4.) Carrying out good management of specialist medical study programs that are quality-oriented and able to compete at the national and international levels.
